Property Tax Assessment Appeals

HOW do I get my property taxes lowered?

The amount paid for property tax on any particular property is based on two factors: the tax rate and the taxable or assessed value. The tax rate is set by law and is applied equally to all properties and is not subject to appeal. The assessed value is determined by the Assessor, in accordance with the laws of California, and is unique for each property. The assessed value is subject to appeal by the property owner. The appeal is made through the Assessment Appeals Board. Assessment Appeals Forms are available directly via the Internet, they may be mailed to you by calling (619) 531-5777, or are available for pick up at the Office of the Clerk of the Board, 1600 Pacific Highway, Room 402, San Diego.

WHEN may I file an Assessment Appeal?

The period allowed for filing an application for an assessment appeal hearing for values on the regular annual assessment roll is July 2 through November 30 of each year.

The period allowed for filing an application for an assessment appeal hearing for values on the supplemental roll is 60 days from the mailing date of the supplemental tax bill.

The period allowed for filing an application for an assessment appeal hearing for values on escape assessments is no later than 60 days after the date of mailing of the tax bill.
