Historically, industrial land uses were common throughout the southern portion of East Village in downtown San Diego. In the mid 1990s, the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) initiated the redevelopment of 26-blocks in the East Village with specific plans for the San Diego Padres Ballpark (Petco Park), the City Library, high-rise residential and commercial buildings, and parking structures.
Since 1998, the County DEH has cooperated with CCDC to identify and clean-up the environmental contamination associated with past industrial practices in the area. To date, an estimated 75,000 tons of contaminated soil has been mitigated throughout the 26-block redevelopment area.
