Quino Checkerspot Butterfly Amendment

The County is pursuing coverage for the Quino checkerspot butterfly (Quino), which was listed as federally endangered in 1997, through the Quino Amendment to the County Subarea Plan. The County Subarea Plan must be amended to obtain coverage for the Quino checkerspot butterfly.  Ongoing efforts include completion of a Conservation Policy Paper, Adaptive Management and Monitoring Paper, and Financing Plan Paper.  In addition, County staff has worked with the Wildlife Agencies to update known occurrence data for Quino on associated maps.

An Envirogram has been prepared to illustrate habitat attributes and stressors for the species. The County also gathered input from scientific experts in order to address the potential for habitat enhancement and to address surveying methodology (see documents below).

A stakeholder meeting on the Quino Amendment was held on October 15, 2009. Concepts for the Financing Plan Paper were discussed and a presentation was given. A draft of the Financing Plan Paper will be distributed to stakeholders later this fall for review and comment.  A previous stakeholder meeting was held on August 6, at which the Conservation Policy Paper and Adaptive Management and Monitoring Paper were discussed and a presentation was given.
