DPW crews clean up in aftermath of storms

During storm events, many county maintained roadways can be suddenly closed by flooding, boulders falling from the mountainside or trees falling across the road, and snow in the mountains. In these severe weather events, DPW crews go on storm patrol, working around the clock to clear the blockages and make our roads passable. Frequently, some roads and streets at low water crossings remain closed after the heavy rains until the water finally recedes. During such events, notices of road closures and openings, as well as other storm information, is posted and constantly updated on the DPW Emergency Page, as well as on the DPW Twitter account.

During the summer and fall months, DPW crews rehabbed several culverts - pipes that convey water under the roadway - with rebar and concrete, or in some cases, with a pipe fabricated on the spot with PVC and steel bands in a tongue-and-grove manner. This work, along with year-round maintenance of culverts, storm channels, and other flood control infrastructure greatly reduces flooding. However, throughout the rainy season, please be attentive to changing road conditions, and especially watchful for road crews clearing storm channels and flooded roadways, snow plowing in the mountains, and making the roads passable for your safety. Their safety depends on you. Thank you from all of us at DPW.
