In 2006, California voters approved Proposition 1B which established $2 billion in potential funding for local streets and roads. These funds are distributed by formula to cities and counties throughout the state. Total Proposition 1B funds available to San Diego County for local streets and roads could exceed $69 million. So far, the County has received $38,400,000 of these Proposition 1B funds.
The State Budget Act of 2009 (Budget Act), as amended to date, allocated $700 million to the State’s Local Streets and Road Improvement, Congestion Relief, and Traffic Safety Account of 2006. Of this $700 million, approximately $442 million is available for city and county road maintenance and construction. Of the approximately $442 million, up to $31,110,000 is estimated to be available for County of San Diego maintained roads.
On October 15, 2009, the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution designating up to $41,510,000 in Proposition 1B funding to be used for specific local streets and roads projects. This designation was for both the $31,110,000 from fiscal year 2009/10 and $10,400,000 from the previous fiscal year. The resolution of October 15 superseded prior resolutions that designated Proposition 1B funds.
