More Winter Still Ahead - Prepare With Free Sand / Bags

Use free sand and bags to prevent erosion

We've already experienced a couple of major storm events in San Diego County this winter season and many residents in the unincorporated areas found that preparation is key in protecting property - that and free sand and bags available at several fire stations in the outlying areas. Stockpiles of free sand and bags were replenished following the very high demand.

Even with days of summer-like weather, we still have several weeks of winter ahead.

So, take advantage of the nice weather and the lull between the storms to help protect your property and the County's storm water infrastructure. Storm water runoff and mud can damage property, block roadways and clog flood control systems and storm drains, causing still further damage.

The Department of Public Works provides sand and bags free of charge in unincorporated areas of San Diego County. Residents just need to bring their own shovel. Locations are:

• 28205 North Lake Wohlford Road, Valley Center
• 16971 Highway 76, Valley Center
• 1587 Highway 78, Julian
• 1364 Tavern Road, Alpine
• Cal Fire, Mount Woodson Station, 16310 Highway 67, Ramona
• North County Fire Protection, Station Four, 4375 Pala Mesa Drive, Fallbrook
• Dulzura Fire Station, 17304 Highway 94, Dulzura

During storm events, emergency information such as road closure notices, snow plowing operations, and other travel advisories are posted on the DPW Emergency page at http://sdcdpw.org/emergency.html, and on Twitter.com/sdcountydpw
