New Innovations Add New Life to County Culverts

New pipe fabricated and installed at the site

The Department of Public Works is employing new and innovative ways to repair culverts in San Diego County that are faster, cheaper, and alleviate the need to tear up the roadway. Several culverts - pipes under the roadway that convey water runoff - have been cleaned and lined with rebar and concrete on the bottom to improve water runoff and add years of new life to the pipe.

Another method utilizes strips of PVC and steel bands fed into a machine right at the existing pipe site and bonded together in a tongue-and-grove method. The resulting pipe is then fed directly into the old pipe. The new PVC/steel pipe is extremely strong, requires less maintenance, presents a smooth surface that helps prevent clogging, and can also be installed without tearing up the roadway.
