The Office of Vital Records and Statistics can help you obtain birth certificates that pertain to births that occurred in San Diego County over the previous 24 months. All other certified copies of birth certificates should be obtained through the County of San Diego Recorder's office.
Birth certificates from the Office of Vital Records and Statistics can ONLY be obtained in person. Mail or e-mail requests will NOT be honored.

Effective January 1, 2012
Per California State Law, the fee for Birth Certificates will increase to $21.00.
The current fee will be honored on all requests received in our office before 4:00 p.m. on December 30, 2011. All requests received after that day must include the $21.00 fee or it will be rejected.
To obtain a certified birth certificate at our office, you will need to have the following information available when you arrive:
- The child's full name as stated on the birth certificate
- The mother's full MAIDEN name
- The child's date of birth
- The child's place of birth
You will need to sign a sworn statement, under penalty of perjury, that you are an authorized person. For definitions of an Authorized Person, read the text of the New Law Effective July 1, 2003.
Those who are NOT authorized by law to receive a regular certified copy will receive a certified copy marked:
'Informational, Not a Valid Document To Establish Identity.'
If you are in need of a full-body birth certificate, which includes confidential information section, or if you have an emergency (i.e. leaving the country or state, have an airline flight, or need to obtain a passport within 14 days of the birth), you must apply for a certified copy of the birth certificate at our office in person.
Office Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The cost for a certified copy of a birth certificate is $21.00. Payment may be cash, check, or money order payable to Health & Human Services Agency.
