Saturday, March 13, at sunset. Enjoy a mixture of astronomy and folklore at the Outdoor Amphitheater.

Wildflower Walks
Saturday, March 20, 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Join a parabotanist from the San Diego Natural History Museum on a hike to discover the wildflower treasures that appear in the desert in springtime. This could be a spectacular wildflower season, so don’t miss out. Limited to 30 participants. Note that two hikes are scheduled each day.

Geology Hike in Blair Valley
Saturday, March 20, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.; meet at Agua Caliente Ranger Station with a vehicle to caravan to Blair Valley. (Blair Valley is approximately 15 miles north of Agua Caliente on S-2.) Guide will lead group to Blair Valley to hike to petroglyph and mortero sites, ending with a climb up Ghost Mountain for lunch. (Bring a packed lunch).

60 Million Years in 60 Minutes

“Ghost Mountain: An Experiment in Primitive Living”
Saturday, March 27, 7 p.m. at the Clubhouse. (Seating is limited to 32. A second viewing will be possible at 8:30 p.m.) Emmy Award Winning Director John McDonald will present the story of poet Marshal South, who lived with his wife Tanya for 17 years on a remote waterless desert mountaintop, raising 3 children. This is a fascinating story and film that chronicles their survival in isolation. An additional eight-minute trailer for John’s new film, “On the Day,” the story of the Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band, will also be screened.

“Ghost Mountain: An Experiment in Primitive Living”
Sunday, March 28, 7 p.m. Based on the audience, the movie may be screened again. See March 27.

Desert Night Life
Friday, April 2, at sunset in the Amphitheater. This interactive program on nocturnal animals and adaptations will feature games and possibly a 10 minute hike to bat and frog locations in park. Parents please accompany children.

Geology Hike
Saturday, April 3, 9 a.m. (meet behind the ranger station at the park entrance). A naturalist leading this hike will discuss rocks, minerals, earthquake fault lines, erosion and Agua Caliente’s unique natural and cultural history. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, hat, sunscreen; kids bring your parents.

Saturday programs are listed at the park in the kiosk at the amphitheater. Programs are subject to change according to weather and ranger availability.

Whether you’re camping or not, there’s lots to do at Dos Picos! On Saturdays there are ranger-led activities that include art and outdoor education based on California science standards.

Junior Rangers:
Like science and nature shows? Here’s your chance for some hands-on learning about rocks, plants, bugs, and more.

Trail Hikes:
Fresh air, sunshine, and the seasonal appearance of local flora and fauna await you. Bring lots of questions. Please, no dogs on the nature trail.

Crafts:
Make and keep a masterpiece. $1 donation per crafter gratefully accepted.

Sidewalk Chalk Art:
Let your “inner artist” come out to play.

Texture Scavenger Hunts:
We take crayon rubbings and family teamwork to a whole new level of FUN!

Fishin’ with the Ranger:
Catch and release using our “Old School” cane poles. You can bring your own pole, too.

Bat Hikes:
Learn how to see and hear real bats as they come out to feed in the park.

Evening Programs:
After sunset, the Plymax theater comes to life with cool computer slide shows, sing-alongs, and the new Live Bug Cam.

Night Hikes:
The whole world changes at night. Constellations and critters come out to play. Let’s see and hear what hides by day. Bring a flashlight and an adult.

Bug Hunts:
Spiders and beetles and ants, oh my! Who doesn’t like to catch bugs?

Puppet Zone:
Always a surprise: Interactive storytelling through puppetry.

Snakes ‘n’ Skins with Ranger Ron:
Come see and feel some creatures living and non.

Composting and Recycling Demonstrations:
Dos Picos is becoming a Zero Waste Facility. Come see how to save the Earth by “Turning the Pile with Ranger Kyle.”

Adventure Hikes:
Playing follow the leader is as easy as falling off a log. Try to keep up with the Ranger and learn a thing or two along the way.

Mission Impossible Flashlight Tag:
Try to sneak up on the Ranger but don’t get caught by the spotlight!

Squirt Race 2000:
Follow the course and stay ahead of the Ranger or face his water cannon. Bring your water weaponry and be prepared to use it!

All programs meet at the amphitheater. $3 parking is available on site.
We take the FREE Discovery Kit Program to schools providing ranger visits by appointment.

Hellhole Canyon Preserve

Hellhole Canyon Preserve is a San Diego County Preserve located in Valley Center at the end of Paradise Mountain Rd. For a safe, rewarding hike, we ask you to bring drinking water, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt and pants, sturdy hiking shoes, snack foods, binoculars, and camera. Hikes at Hellhole can be strenuous and temperatures can get very hot.

Spring Outdoor Adventure trips include Joshua Tree rock climbing, indoor rock climbing, and kayaking.

San Diego County Archaeological Society Offers Various Guest Speakers. The San Diego County Archaeological Society is dedicated to the study and preservation of the archaeological and anthropological heritage of San Diego County. Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. The Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve works to protect the preserve, assist the rangers, lead interpretive walks, remove exotic-invasive plant species to be replaced with natives, and other related activities. The board meets monthly and welcomes new volunteers in any capacity. Call 858-538-2527 for more information.
Los Peñasquitos Tracking Team. The Los Peñasquitos Tracking Team provides focused wildlife studies in and around the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. They offer a number of classes in the art of wildlife tracking and naturalist skills development. They host a free monthly tracking walk on the second Saturday each month open to anyone. Trails are reopened for horse riding and hiking on foot. Witness the recovery of the landscape since the preserve was damaged by the Cedar Fire in 2003 - the incredible views are still intact! Plant Your Roots in Potrero
Saturday, March 6 and Saturday, April 3. This program will teach all about the plant world and plants native to our area. It will help you to identify plants in San Diego County. This program will also include an art activity having to do with leaves. Program starts at 1 p.m. at the indoor pavilion across from the ranger station.

Coffee with a Ranger
Sunday, March 14. This is a great opportunity to meet with one of our rangers here at the park and ask any questions you may have or share stories about park adventures. Enjoy a cup of coffee and some snacks while you get to know your park and your ranger better. Stop by the ranger station any time between 9 and 10 a.m.

Special Easter Event
Saturday, April 3. Potrero Regional Park will sponsor Easter egg decorating, a scavenger hunt, and some Easter crafts. You don’t want to miss this fun event. Program will start at 10:30 at the indoor pavilion across from the ranger station. Bring your lunch so you can enjoy a picnic then catch the 1 p.m. plant program. Space is limited so please call to reserve your spot for this event.

Nature Hike
Saturday, April 17. This is an amazing chance to see what the park looks like during springtime. This hike will take you around our seasonal pond and help you to identify native plants and animals. We will also explore a section of our newly acquired Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) land with an amazing view of the surrounding communities. Hikers meet at the ranger station at 10 a.m. Water and a walking stick are encouraged.

Nature Hike
Saturday, May 1. This hike will feature several of the MSCP properties that have been acquired in the East County. We will be looking for and identifying MSCP plants and animals that we come in contact with. We will also walk around our park’s seasonal pond on this moderate hike that will last about 2.5 hours.

Mother and Child Event
Saturday, May 8. Moms, we would like to invite you to enjoy some warm beverages and yummy snacks while creating beautiful memories with your children. We will have crafts for children to make as mother’s day gifts and fun family crafts for moms to take part in. This is a great opportunity to embrace nature while bonding with your family in our lush park. Why not pack a lunch and make a day of it? Meet at the indoor pavilion at 10 a.m. Space is limited so please call to reserve your spot for this event.

Rancho Guajome Adobe

Featured on HGTVs "Restore America" and Sunset magazine, this 7,000 sq. ft. adobe contains more than 20 rooms and represents one of the finest examples of Anglo-Hispanic domestic architecture. It was built in 1853 on a Mexican land grant of 2,219 acres by Col. Cave Johnson Couts and his wife, Ysidora Bandini of Old Town San Diego, who ran a huge cattle and sheep ranching operation from this rancho. Once a city unto itself, the adobe included a chapel, school, general store, and beautiful gardens and courtyard. Restored in 1996, it is a must-see.

Guided Tours, Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m., 12:30 and 2 p.m. Take a docent led tour of the adobe and grounds. Rain cancels. School tours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays by advance reservation, $1 per child. Adult tour groups of 15 or more may make an advance reservation for private tours weekdays, $5/adult.

Fiesta at Guajome
Join us for another Fiesta at Guajome! Entertainment will include an equestrian performance by Escaramuza las Golondrinas, Ballet Folklorico, and live music. Children will be excited by the many activities, such as building and decorating a pinwheel, creating a mini piñata, making a bead bracelet, and personalizing a maraca. All children’s activities are free with paid admission. Watch demonstrations of some of the activities that were part of life here in the 19th Century, such as bobbin lacers, tortilla making, weaving and spinning, and blacksmithing. And don’t forget the Mexican food for sale.

Fall/Winter Outdoor Adventure trips include rock climbing, mountain biking, ropes course, mud cave tour and snowboarding.

Louis A. Stelzer Park and Oakoasis Preserve together cover about 650 acres of land and offer several miles of beautiful trails. Nestled in the northern hills of Lakeside, both parks offer guests a chance to witness beauty only found in this side of the county while enjoying an abundant plant and animal ecosystem. At Louis A. Stelzer Park guests can picnic and hike or simply come and play with the children, while Oakoasis offers miles of hiking trails for those that want to get away and enjoy nature.

Louis A. Stelzer Park is located on Wildcat Canyon Road, approximately 1/2 mile north of Willow Rd. From the south, take Highway 67 north to Mapleview St. and exit east. Take Mapleview to Ashwood St. and turn left. Ashwood becomes Wildcat Canyon Rd. Park is 1/2 mile up Wildcat Canyon from Willow. From the north, take Highway 67 south to Willow Rd. and turn east. Take Willow Rd. to Wildcat Canyon Rd. and turn left. Park is 1/2 mile up on right hand side. Oakoasis Preserve is also located on Wildcat Canyon Rd. approximately 2 miles north of Stelzer Park on left hand side.

All interpretive programs are free, but reservations are required, and there is always a $3 parking fee for Louis A. Stelzer Park. Ninety-minute Nature Walk
First Saturday of the month. Join us for a ranger-led 90 minute walk along the 1 ½ mile Wooten Loop – Riparian Trail. An easy to moderate hike on an unpaved, yet maintained trail. We will travel along an open hillside with views of Stelzer Ridge and Wildcat Canyon and then return through the shaded oak- and sycamore-lined trail along Stelzer Creek.

Oakoasis Nature Hike
Every second Saturday of the month, 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Join us for a Ranger-led hike through this beautiful preserve. Travel along the 2 1/2 mile loop to see how well the plants are recovering from the 2003 wildfires. Enjoy the shade of the majestic oaks and the wonderful views. Bring water and comfortable hiking shoes. Meet at the Oakoasis parking lot.

Composting Demonstration
Sunday, April 18 and Sunday, May 16, 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. This is a hands-on, how-to demonstration program on the benefits of and how to compost. Presented by a ranger and certified master composter. Learn how to start composting and/ or tips to improve your composting. Bring work gloves if you want to really experience it.

Family Campout
3 p.m. on Friday, May 14 – 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 15. Have you wanted to go camping but were unsure about what to do? Bring your camp supplies and we’ll help you set up. Learn how to camp while limiting your impact on the environment. We’ll have an evening hike and marshmallow roast. In the morning we’ll cook you a hearty breakfast of sausage, pancakes, eggs, coffee, and juice! Bring a flashlight and prepare for a cool evening. Plan for your own Friday dinner. Sweetwater River Valley Regional Park Summit Site

Visitors to this regional park have quite a palette of activities from which to choose. The Summit Meadows portion of the park rests atop a hill overlooking the Sweetwater Valley and offers modern campsites— including some with corrals for equestrians who want to bring their horses and explore the 15 miles of trails in the park. Below the Summit Meadows are hundreds of acres of open space area including grasslands, chaparral and river habitat that provide a rich variety for hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers.

Ranger interpretive talk: Volunteering
Third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. (there will be no talk in December, however). Volunteering in County Parks. Meets at the Provençe House, 4370 Sweetwater Road in Bonita. This is a 30-minute orientation for citizens who are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities in our County Parks, including the popular Sweetwater Volunteer Trail Patrol and Community Service Hours for students. Over ten miles of trails and service roads open to hiking, mountain biking and equestrian use. Preserve visitors are welcome to visit our new visitor center. Live animals and exhibits on Goodan History, Cedar Fire, Kumeyaay and the MSCP are on display.

Events, hikes and programs start at various Preserve locations. Some require a one mile walk from Goodan Ranch staging to the Visitor Center. Please check descriptions closely. No vehicular traffic is permitted in the Preserve. Transportation for those with disabilities can be arranged, by calling the ranger at (858) 513-4737.

To reach the Goodan staging area, take Poway Road to its intersection with Garden Road. Go east on Garden Road, then south on Sycamore Canyon Road. Sycamore Canyon Road ends at staging area.

The Highway 67 staging area can be accessed through SOUTHBOUND Highway 67 only, half a mile south of Scripps Poway Parkway.

Scavenger Hunt

Join park staff for a self-guided, fun scavenger hunt designed specifically for children. Kids will have a chance to follow clues and find various points in search of the final treasure. Hike and a Story

Nearly every child has been to a story time at some point or another, but here is your chance to experience one in the outdoors. County Parks and County Libraries are coming together to provide a program for children, ages 2 to 5, where they can hear stories related to nature and animals in a wonderful, natural environment. There will also be nature related crafts that the children can work on after the story time. Program will be followed with a short walk through the preserve. Edible Plants
Saturday, April 10, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Come learn all there is to know about our local edible plants from author and college professor Lisa Chaddock. Several Native American tribes have survived in this very region in the past, so see, touch, and taste what they used on a daily basis for nourishment and medicine. This program can help you learn what is safe and not safe to eat when hiking or camping in the local region. Learn what is safe to cook with and what sorts of dishes those who use to live in this area cooked and prepared. Program will be followed with a walk through the preserve. Wildlife Bingo
Saturday, April 24, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Bingo! Join park staff for a chance to play a fun game while immersing yourselves within our local plant and animal life. This bingo game, designed specifically for children, will give your small ones a chance to seek out several species of our local plants as well as our furry, scaly, and feathered friends. Participants will be given a bingo card containing pictures and it will be the child’s task to locate and cross off each one in an attempt to get Bingo! Each child will receive a small token for playing along. Parent participation is encouraged, so bring out the whole family for a fun day at the park. Star Party
Friday, May 7, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Join SDAA volunteer astronomers and County Parks for a night with the stars. Come experience the chance to view Saturn, possibly Mars as well as several open star clusters, globular star clusters and even galaxies. These events are informative and fun for the whole family. We promise you will be wowed by this star experience!
Program will be held at Highway 67 Staging area accessed from Highway 67 southbound only. Rain or clouds cancel.


Geocaching Event
Saturday, May 15, all day. Never heard of Geocaching? Well, now is the time to learn. Geocaching is a sort of treasure hunt, where users use a handheld GPS device to find a hidden container, usually containing a log book and small trinkets. This phenomenon has grown to a world-wide level now available in every corner of the planet. This is your chance to experience this sport in the only County of San Diego park where it is allowed. Guests must bring their own portable GPS devices and be familiar with them. This is a self guided tour. All new geocaches will be placed out for this event, celebrating the end of the rainy season. Program will meet at Goodan staging area. Rain or muddy conditions cancel.
