Office of the Public Defender

The San Diego County Public Defender's Office was established in 1988 by a county resolution and has since evolved into one of the finest in the nation.  In 2009, the County of San Diego consolidated indigent defense services (Public Defender, Alternate Public Defender, Office of Assigned Counsel, Multiple Conflict Office and Juvenile Delinquency) into one agency.  There are office locations throughout the county.

Announcement:

ELEVATION OF TWO LONG TERM DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDERS TO

THE SAN DIEGO SUPERIOR COURT BENCH

The Public Defender is delighted to inform you that Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., has announced the elevation of Matt Braner and Selena Epley to the San Diego Superior Court bench.

Matt has been with the office since August of 1989. During his tenure he worked in the Vista, El Cajon and downtown branches. For the past five years, he has been the head of our writs and appeals division.

Additionally, Matt has been the point person from our office for realignment, even before it was enacted. Matt is a hard-working and innovative legal thinker whose intellectual abilities as an appellate lawyer is known and respected statewide. He will be sorely missed.

Selena Epley joined the office in September 1995. During her tenure, she has served as a trial lawyer in CMU, juvenile delinquency, central felony and South Bay. Selena is a highly skilled and tenacious litigator. She is extremely good on her feet and quick witted. Most recently, she served as assistant supervisor of central felony team A.

In addition to her trial and supervisory work, Selena has been involved in working on cutting edge technological improvements to enhance courtroom presentations and she also established a mentor program for new and misdemeanor lawyers.

We wish Matt and Selena well as they enter this new chapter in their careers.
